On my 1994 $-Runner the power and timing seens to be off even though I tuned it up 2 months ago. It sucks up gas like crazy and sounds like a lawn mower. The O2 sensor has been on for a while too. Could it be the altitude change from 5000 to 9000 ft above sea level?

My '86 4runner won't down shift when I'm going up a hill. When I push the gas my truck revs real high and then up shifts instead of giving me the power to get up the hill. I am having to drive it in Low 2 around the neighborhoods just so I'll have enough power to get around. It does fine in Low 2. Also, where can I find a bikini top? Thanks. Niles

I have a 1995 4 runner with about 310,000 KM on it. It needs some work, like a new tailgate, but is still running fairly strong. If anyone knows of a place to buy a reasonably priced tailgate, it would be appreciated. I know that there are others, on this posting site, that are in the same boat. I have not been able to locate any aftermarket parts, and salvage parts are almost nil. Rust is a known problem for this era of 4 runner. Anyway, thanks if there is any advice. Chris

Need Help, I am replacing the TPS Sensor on my 1990 4Runner. The dealer has told me three different part numbers, 89452-12040, 89452-14050, or 89452-28010. I hear this from every place I call. If anyone knows the correct one I would appreciate the response. My 4Runner Info; First eight of the VIN# JT3VN39W, was manufactured in 07-1989, and has a EFI 3.0 liter engine. Chris Howey,

Our 1999 Toyota 4 runner needed the entire block replaced when a connecting rod broke and blew a hole through the block. The car had perfect maintenance records and at 78,000 miles we neede to replace the entire engine. This was a $6500.00 job plus car rental fees and toyota would assume none of the responsibility. I think that this is totally unfair and poor business practice. We bought the Toyota because they were supposed to stand behind their product. That is obviously not true!!! Has anyone else had this problem is there any group action being taken. We can't be the only ones this has happened to!!

I have a 1997 Toyota Forerunner 4 wheel drive. When I recently tried to engage the 4 wheel drive by pressing the button on the 4 wheel drive shifter I heard a click or relay underneath but nothing happens. It was working 2 weeks ago and a light comes on the dash showing it was engaged but nothing now. It sounds like a relay is not working and the 20A fuse for the 4 wheel is good so it's getting voltage. Any suggestions as what could have caused this, and this must have happened to someone else I'm sure? It is 15-30 degrees in the area recently so is it weather related possibly? Thanks, Eric

I have a 1987 SR5 Turbo. The engine has just been completely re-done and a new turbo installed. The body has been done, two new front fenders new fiberglass rear fenders. The truck ran poorly after the installation of the engine, low power on bottom end. The paint job was completed and rust check applied. When we picked it up it had no power(missed bucked and would only move in reverse). I have done the checks on all the components, the code we get indicates the ignitor did not fire four times consecutive. The ignitor tests good and I tried a new one. It will start and run for a few seconds with the cold start injector plugged in but will not start with the cold start injector unplugged. There is 12 volts at the injectors, I suspect a poor ground but where do I start.

I just bought a 1987 4x4 4runner and the manual 5 speed transmission gets really hot after a ten or fifteen mile drive on the freeway. I put my hand directly on the tranny and it was HOT. I believe the gears are all stock in the diff.s and the xfer case. The RPMs stayed consistant, so I don't believe the clutch is going out. (I have burnt out a few clutches in my life!)I drained the transmission and it appears to have about one gallon of fluid. There were a few small (almost like metal powder) particles of metal on the magnetic drain plug but nothing substantial. I have never heard of a manual tranny getting real hot before. Can someone tell me what could be causing this? Would appreciate any help.

Not uncommon for a transmission to get hot during high speed driving. My shift levers get nearly too hot to touch. Synthetic gear oil will help lower the temps a bit.

After running for a while, my 1989 4runner begins to bog down a little. When this happens i am unable to increase my speed even when i down shift; it feels as if a choke has been some how activated. This problem primarily occurs when the engine has been running for a while. I have taken it to 3 mechanics and all diagnostics check out o.k.. I have also replaced the fuel filter, ignition coil, alternator and it has new plugs and wires. I am not sure what to do as it never acts up when i take it to the mechanic as the engine needs to be good and hot for the problem to exist. At a lose, any suggestions would be great! Thanks.

My 1987 toyota 4runner with the 22re efi developed an extremely bad miss out of no where. It seems to be running real rich on #3 and kind of rich on #1 and cold on #1 Dist cap, rotor, plugs wires all good. All injectors are pulsing correctly on the two cylinders that were not running rich. When holding accelerator steady at 2500 rpm or so the miss will go away. for a minute and then come back. one person has told me to look into a ecm. others have told me to look into the distributor. any help would be greatly appreciated

I have the same problem as Ed from Texas. '95 4Runner - Stereo Wiring Question...... I have finally decided to replace the OEM stereo in my 4Runner, problem is that when I connected the rear speakers to my new stereo they have no output. I can connect the rear channel outs from the new stereo to a front speaker and that works so I know that the stereo is working fine. I have read that there may be an amp inline with the rear speakers that is causing the problem. The toyota wiring harness that connects to the old stereo has two speaker pairs and a single connector as well. Does anyone know if this lone wire is a feed to an amp for the rear speakers and if so what the voltage and MA out should be? Instructions / Precautions ??? Hi, I recently needed to replace my radiator on my 1985 Pickup SR5 (2.4l Turbo, automatic). I have two issues/concerns/questions: 1/ What are the two small connections at the lower part of the radiator ? When I disconnected them, a red liquid came out. It looked like transmission fluid but I checked the level and it appears OK... 2/ The new radiator was identical to the old one, except that it did not have a small inlet at the top, at the right of the main radiator ... is this for something essential ?(the line to this inlet comes along the top of the engine). Many thanks for your advice ! Cheers, Paul

I have a 1990 4runner with 3.0, 4X4 Manual trans, 192,000 miles. Starts and runs just fine, but at freeway speeds, the engine will suddently die out for 5 seconds or so and then most of the time pick right back up. Occasionally, it will die (seldom at this point), and I finally push in the clutch only for it to stop completely. Letting out on the clutch will eventually lead to a running response again and I'm on my way. I have replaced cts, cap, rotor, recently changed wires, plugs. I have checked with ohm meter the tps, air flow meter, and seem o.k. No engine codes in beginning. Feeling I checked enough to narrow it down, I purchased a new ignitor from Napa (little different in size, but plugged right in) Engine ran great for 15 miles or so, then problem reoccurred and now I had two codes from computer, one for bad ignitor, and one for bad vehicle speed sensor. By the way, after the problem started I drove another 5 miles or so and the problem went away but the check engine kept flashing. Limp mode?? My original ignitor didn't throw any codes. Questions, I can't find a vehicle speed sensor in the dealer manuals. Is this circuitry within the ignitor? My speedo cable squeaks, is there a sensor in the instrument cluster? Is it a part of the ABS? I recently changed the clutch (tranny out), and although the problem was not immediate, might be related, is there a sensor on the manual tranny? lost on this one. Any ideas? I've seen one other instance of a similar problem, but it was someone responding incorrectly to a question, so everyone ignored it. thanks

What is the difference between a limited model Toyota 4runner and and SR5 (during the years of 1996-1998)? I understand there is leather interior in the Limited, but what else is different, like size/shape/etc? Thank you for your response!

I have a 1988 toyota 4 runner with an automatic transmission. If i put the truck in drive it is in a high gear, not 1st and takes off very slow. If i put it in l1 (low) it goes into first and drives fine if i move it through the gears manually. Ther is no slippage.I am not getting voltage at the ect port of the diagnosis box when i move the throttle.
