I just purchased a completely stock 1986 4Runner, 5spd manual, with 88,000 original miles. This thing is perfect to say the least. Garaged, all service records, 1 owner, and the fiberglass top is still the same red as the body. I paid a premium price (7,500.00) for this truck, but I feel great about it. I personally know the original owner. This truck has NEVER been off-road, and has never had the top removed. I did notice that there are no seatbelts for the rear seat. Does anyone know where I can get seatbelts for the rear seat. Thanks.

Hi: Great site and I am looking for a solution to a very annoying problem. I have a 1990 4Runner, 2 Door, SR5, 4 cylinder with 265k kms on it. The engine has been completely rebuilt from the bottom up. My problem is that when the vehicle is cold it starts ok, and will fast idle and decrease to a regular idle as it should. Then I drive it for a few hundred feet and it is like I'm running out of gas, the engine dies and sputters( this will happen 4 or 5 times) but if I push the accelerator to the floor the engine roars to life and is gone. This may happen several times and when I drive at highway speeds you can feel it cut in and out but only for a second or so. This started before the engine rebuild so I don't think it is related to the engine, what I am suspecting is maybe the fuel pump or some component in the fuel system. It started out one day when going along the highway, and then it didn't happen for several more days but now it is regular. This has been happening for a year or so. Also after I drive about 10 kms and everything is at normal temp., everything seems to work fine until it cools down again then it starts all over again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

need advice, i was recently the victim of car theft attempt. the bastard mangled the ignition key cylinder in his attempt leaving my 91 toy 4x4 pickup very wounded, (broken screwdriver shaft in ignition). to avoid the high price of a dealer's mechanic repair i may attempt to fix the damage myself. my haynes repair manual shows this to be a realistic job for a below-average do-it-myselfer. any help would be greatly appreciated. once again, ignition key cylinder replacement on 1991 toy 4x4, 4cyl, 5 speed. thanks, dan 619-702-4557

Proud owner of a stock 86' 4-runner that I've had possession of for 10+ years. Today I finally thought I might try to take the top off and take a drive in the sun. First of all it's totally lame for me to have waited this long however, I realize why I've never tried before. I don't know how! I first unbolted the 4 bolts on the ceiling between the front and rear seats - no go, it won't budge. I don't see any other bolts. Any tips???

I have an '86 4-Runner with the good old 4-banger. It has a 4" ProComp StageII Susp. Lift and a 3" body lift. I run 33" Kumho MT sometimes, but I mainly run my 35" Boggers. It is slow as hell but can still get around just fine. Like everyone else, I am looking for a used Can-Back soft top. They used to cost $675 but they now cost $775. This is a little steep for my wallet. Hit me back if you know anyone.

I just bought a 97 4Runner SR5 4x4. It's really nice but I had a couple of questions. First does anybody know if the "starting" problem affects this model or year? I've read a lot of entries talking about this problem and I want to know if I should be looking out for it. Also, the engine idles rather fast (about 1200 rpm) when it's in park even if it's warmed up. When it's in gear and stopped it only revs at about 8000 but I think even that is to fast. Does anyone know how to fix this or what might cause the problem?

I just moved to washington. I own an 85' 4runner SR5. 96,000 original miles. It is gray with the SR5 stripes and seats. I gave it a 1 inch body lift plus a 4-inch suspension lift + extended shackles. I am curretly running 33's on the tires and am soon looking for 35's. Hope to get to 38's soon but the wife has a strangle hold on the wallet and a death glare in her eyes. No engine mods. Recently pretzled the rear driveshaft, popped the front one apart, screwed up the ring and pinion in the rear(which i later changed Both from 4.11 to 5.29) , and blew a bering in the T-case. All this on one trail! All that is behind me now... All is well now, I moved my lockrights form the rear to the front and placed a detroit in the rear. that's it!

Just found the Guestbook via a Webcrawler search for Toyota 4Runner After market. Anyhow, I have a '97 fully loaded SR5 and am looking for upgrading ideas. I don't plan on doing any rock climbing however will be taking it off-road. Looks like the first mods are going to be the K&N intake and some bug guards. It seems a ton of us are having/had starting problems. I too have the same problem however if it starts after 3-5 tries (one right after another). I was talking with a locksmith a month or so ago who told me he gets tons of calls to replace the ignition on the 4Runners. I haven't talked with him (nor any other locksmith) but wonder if that could be the cause of the problem we are having. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks,

I own a 90' 4Runner SR5, Auto, V6 3.0L that has been my daily use vehicle, so anything I do to it won't be too extreme until I get another commuter. However I do alot of offroading anyway, and keep grinding my rear bumper into the ground whether going forward or backwards (even going up at an angle)at serious inclines. with the wrap-around chrome bumper going tire to tire, it makes it difficult to find smaller bumpers to try, since most offroad shops only sell bumpers that reach from tail-light to tail-light (straight across the back) I need a bumper that, instead of being flat and straight on the bottom, would start at the tire and cut straight up to the tail-lights THEN across the back. this would hopefully alleviate any tail drag on the inclines. I'm having a hard time finding a custom shop that will do what I want reasonably, so any suggestions or ideas on how to deal with this would be GREATLY appreciated. I will eventually go all out on beefing it up, but for right now I have to stay sorta moderate in what I do to it. THANKS for any help. HOUSE

About six months ago, I bought a '92 4Runner and I love it to death. As of now, I have put in a K&N filtercharger, smittybuilt grill and taillight guards, PIAA fog lights, downey exaust, etc... However, I was wondering if there were any aftermarket superchargers or turbochargers that would work on my 3.0 liter V6 engine. If this is not an option, advice on wether I should put a new 3.4 liter V6 (with a supercharger made by TRD) at a cost of $9000 or to just sell this 4Runner and buy a '96 or above 4Runner would be greatly appriciated. Last night aliens visited me and told me of a new world order involving the enslaving of mutant carrots and the chin dynasty. It was foretold by the large garbage can in my dream that I would be a leader among this people and my 4runner would fly with wings to a new galaxy as I pass through the rift of my uterus. It was an amazing dream and the aliens told me to just us LSD again if I wanted to contact them. Since then we’ve been in frequent contact. If anyone would like to join my space quest and help me build my wings for my 4runner out of old computer parts. The aliens tell me how it’s cool.

I have owned a 95 4-runner for 3+ years now and I love it. It was all stock when I purchased it. V6 auto, loaded. Well, now it reads like; 33-12/50s, American Racing Tailgunners, flowmaster (sounds great), dual 3inch tips, K&N, Downey skid plate, 12 speaker 550 watt stereo, Tint,KC highlights and I'm not near done. Bottom end only. body is clean interior nice. (gray cloth) soft top. AC. I was thinking about selling it. I would rather keep it though. here are my lastest issues, when the rain comes down hard, the engine idles low and even mises a bit. then it takes a day or so to start running right again. after that it runs like a dream for a month or two. the other issue is suspenion, when i hang a u turn, the front end creaks and groans loudly. any ideas what this is?

I just bought a 2001 4Runner, and traded my 1999 4 runner for it. I had a set of goodyear MTRS on the 99, and had them swaped onto the 2001. The probelm is now my tires rub like hell. does anyone know what changed, and can I do anything to help, without changing tires. Also does anyone know of a company that makes a lift for the 2001? dane

Carbon Fiber Hoods for 1996-2001 Toyota 4runner w/ hood scoop. I was hoping to get some opinions if these are worth producing. Give me e-mail if you like the idea to roger@suvclass.com :) thanks!

Seems others have rec'd good feedback from you...so I'll follow suit, if thats alright. I have a 91 4Runner 6cyl. and it doesn't always start up lately...usually 3 turns of the key with just a click and then the fourth starts it up...sometimes on the first try as if nothing is wrong...solenoid? starter? And can I do this myself with dropping the engine or some major removal? I'm no master mechanic...can you advise me? Thanks for your site!

Have seen you out on the trail a few times and enjoy your site a great deal. It is hard to find information on some of the more obscure trails in California that I like to traverse. Please stop by my website and take a look.

I thank you for this great site, it took me several hours to get to it from the mass of other 4 runner listings but glad I did get here. Your tricks section answered my questions and a couple I had not thought about. I have run a 4x4 short bed R22 fom 1 year old, vintage 1977 and it is now with normal rotted box but rest good and mechanics perfect although its a low milage (190,000km) So will do it up over this summer. In its place I have an 89 4 runner 2 door SR that is showroom body and mostly good mechanicaly with high milage 300.000 + km. Now doing interior up and your tips helped alot. Need to know what can be done to upgrade/renew the quasi chrome rain gutters that are above the windows?

I'm hoping to get my first Toyota 4x4 soon. I'm pretty straped for cash at the moment but I have my Fiero for sale. A couple of my friends have 4x4 trucks so I want to get my own to go with them off-roading. Thanks just wanted to sign the guestbook.

i have and 86 runner and the rear leaf springs are really sagging and weak. it seams like the 88-89 runner's rear springs are a little more stout. would those transfer over and is that the right way to go? has any one ever used those add-a-leafs? are there any other rigs that have strong springs that i could get in my runner that are more stout (like something i could get at a junk yard). any help would be great! ps. just turned 280,000 miles!

What gas milage should I expect from an 85-86 4Runner with a new motor? The EPA says it should get around 25 mpg, but I'm not sure this is right. Thanks alot

At about 30 mph on washboard roads, my stock 99 4 runner 4x4 rear end loses traction and starts sliding around resulting in loss of control. Any ideas on how to fix would be helpful. A friend put bilstiens on his 4 runner but this did not help.

I am considering buying a 88 4-Runner as a 4x4 project, but I only want a 4x4 that has a limited slip (POSI) rear differential. Does anyone know if Toyota offered a limited slip differential in 88? If so, how do you determine by sight if it is a limited slip differential?

I just bought my first Toyota Truck. Even though I am a very pretty (I think) girl, all my family thinks I a now either a lesbo or a tomboy!. Well, neither is true. I just like to ride high up and look down on all the rest of the drivers in the world. But I have a question for you men. My Tundra does not have factory foglamps. I called the dealer and they now want $400.oo for what would have been a $100.00 option. My question is: Where can I go to get some factory (or other) foglamps that will fit my toyota truck spot in the bumper where the factory foglights are supposed to go? I need a good foglamp, but not for $400.00! I would appreciate any help. Thanks again, Paulette.

Great 4runner website, I don't find too many of them so it's nice when I finally do find one. I have an 89' 4runner with new 35" BFG's, 2 inch body lift, 5 inch lift, leaf springs, custom paint, Clarion system, side steps, Rancho shocks, etc. Right now I am getting ready to install a new timing chain and a new header (old manifold was cracked). In the next year I plan to install a Pro comp light bar, KC lights, new rear bumper, and numerous other goodies. The only complaints I have is bad gas mileage due to the size of the tires. I'm very pleased with everything else though, it's a nice truck and it's definitely a looker.
