I am going to try to help a friend fix his 98 4Runner. The problem is that it hessitates quite awhile before it will move shifting from park. I am hoping that we just need to service the transmission (filter and fluid change). I have heard of some problems with 4Runner automatics. If you have any further suggestions please write. It is greatly appreciated. Keith

Howdy. The hydraulic pistons that hold the back door up on my '96 4Runner have failed about 3 times and have been replaced each time with stock Toyota pistons (that keep failing). Anyone know where to get better pistons and also if they were ever subject to a recall?? Otherwise, love my Runner! Thanks, Jim.

I havc a 96 limited. I was told when I bought it as a certified pre owned that the head gasket had been replaced. Well, you guessed it, the head gasket has blown again. I know very little about the mechanics of a vehicle but I have heard that this problem is not unusual. I would appreciate any input or source material I could use in the battle with the dealer.

I have had my 94 Toyota 4runner V6 since it was new and was wondering where I could find stats on it such as HP/Torque etc. I'm also not sure if the ABS works because my front left wheel locks up when I press hard on the brakes. My main problem is when I turn the wheel full to the left or right and drive, it makes a horrible clanking/grinding noise from the front wheels. Any thoughts?

My '96 4Runner has an after-market sunroof that doesn't seal properly all of a sudden. It pops open slightly when I hit a bump in the road or when I open the driver's side window, and leaks some water when it's closed. I have two questions: #1, does the manufacturer's repair manual (NOT the Chilton manual) have info on how to fix sunroofs and #2 can anybody can send me info on what might be wrong and how to fix it? Thanks.

Front panels are easy to find, but I am having trouble locating replacement cut outs for the back. I have an '88 Toyota 4 Runner and am having problems with the exhaust manefold. Whoever owned it before me did a custom job replacing the bolts and made a real mess of things, I tried tapping the bolt hole and refitting a new bolt into the manafold, still have leaking problems. I am now looking at replacing the complete engine since I just spent $3,000 on a new body for the truck. I love my truck and would dearly love to keep it. My mechanic says it will cost $1,200 for an engine alone, never mind the labour. Does anyone know where I can find an engine that isn't so expensive? I've found parts are quite difficult to locate around here so I'm trying this method. Thanks a bunch for your time.

I have a 1994 4Runner and sbsolutely love it. We just bought a 2002 Tundra and think Toyota is the only way to go. I have had my "Check Engine Light " come on 3 times as of today and the previous 2 times I had Oxygen Sensors replaced when this occurred. I just had one replace about 4 monthes ago. I guess I will have to bring it in again to find that it is another Oxygen Sensor. Other than that, I truly have had no problems what-so-ever. I am a bit annoyed tonight, but realize that I still drive the best vehicle all-around. Just wanted to add this to your great site! Any of you ever have this happen to you?

Question: 98 4Runner SR5 V6 4WD have problems starting. It is not the starter. It acts like the battery but then she will start after a few tries. 103,000 miles. Anyone have a suggestion to stop this. Also the engine light seems to come off and on after hitting 100,000 miles. Is this a dummy light telling me to get that tune up or is there something I am not seeing. Any help would be great. I intend to drive the truck until it rusts out around me and there is not a spot of rust on her.

Hi, thanks for the site. Last weekend I bought an 86 4Runner. It doesn't have an owner's manual, and I have a simple owner's manual-type question. It appears that to get the rear seats to fold down flat you have to lift the seat cushions. I can see the cushion hinges, but the cushions appear to be latched down and I can't find the latches. Could somebody please tell me how the cushions fold up so the seat backs can fold down?

1991 6 cyl 4wd automatic with 188K. Have put a lot of money into repairs. My problem is that the temperature gauge has a mind of its own. When engine starts from cold the engine will heat up (car heater warms in 5 mins) but temperature gauge won't rise or rises very slowly. This is a problem as the overdrive will not kick in util the engine is at operational temperature. Once you get it to O.T. and start driving on the highway (especailly at night or cool weather) the gauge begins to drop and transmission drops out of overdrive. If the weather is cool enough the gauge will drop to " 0." However, if you stop and idle the engine, the temp comes right back up. But if you start driving again the same thing happens again. I had a valve job about 5K ago and they replaced numerous parts (the list is too long)including the water pump, thermostat. The radiator was also acid washed. Since then I have replaced the thermostat a second time and the temperature gauge sensor. The Toyota dealer master mechanic is scratching his head. The "Two Guys" (auto website) didn't have an answer either. Other than that she runs great (it should after about $5,000 over the last two years)! Don't get me wrong as I really love her and it took me a long time to get her. Anybody had /or heard about this type of problem. Does anybody know the Toyota guru of gurus? Any help would be apreciated. Thanks! James Walker.

Hello. I am changing my timing belt on my 1994 4-Runner (3.0 3VZ engine) and noticed that the no.1 idler pulley does not have a spring to keep tension on the timing belt. In fact, the idler just flops back and forth without any tension. Is this normal for a 94'? My 91' does have a spring to produce tension. Thanks

Hi! Great page. I have a 91' 4WD 4 runner (automatic trans) with 187K. Recently, I have been having a problem with the temp gauge/overdrive. While driving (especially at night)the temp gauge will drop as if it is cooling off. Then it will drop out of overdrive. I can stop and idle a while and the temp will come up. But as soon as start driving,it will drop out of overdrive. I have replaced the thermostat twice. I have also replaced the temperature sensor. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Thanks. James

My 4-Runner blew a head gasket at 56K miles and now has another blown head gasket at 102K miles. Be advised that I am finding out you may have to change your head gaskets more than you change your tires if the block or heads were not milled properly during the first change. I am currently looking at a $2000-$4500 bill to get my Runner up and running again

Hi. Interesting page. Saw your comments on driving in snow and here in Iceland we know its right, the magic is to lower the air pressure and you go anywere in snow. Most common here is 38" tire (Monster Mudder, GrowndHawk or Dick Cepek) and in snow we lower the air pressure even down to 2-3 PSI. It dosen't harm your tire when driving in snow. Hey guys, I have a 1985 four runner it has removable hard top , stereo, radar detector, and alarm system, exellent tires, and it runs awsome. Here's the problem when driven it makes a clunk noise in the rear end passanger side, I am afraid I cant afford repair so I have to let her go. This is the only mechanical problem it has so its my loss and your gain. I am asking 2500.00 for her and i think thats fair considering her shape, I will look at trades or if you know what possibly could be wrong with her please lemme know. Thanks guys

I am buying a 91' Toyota Surf V6 (four runner) that has a blown head gasket. The only reason I'm buying it is it's really cheap and otherwise in excellent condition and it will make for a good project. I am looking for any helpful information on changing the head gaskets) and timing belt. I have the Haynes manual and although it's fairly in-depth, after looking into it, it seems like this is going to be extremely difficult. I haven't started tearing into it just yet as I am still trying to gather info. Please e-mail me if you have any experience with this and what all it will entail as far as time, special tools needed, and where I can get better quality replacement parts and upgrades while I have the engine torn apart. Thanks

ATTENTION YOU 4RUNNER FOOLS OUT THERE!!!!!!!!! I have an 1988 4runner with 234,400 miles on it. still running like new. i have read some of your questions and i cant seem to email some of you. anyways my back window doesnt work in it so i took a look and the relay is in the middle section in the back and goes to the fuses up front by the driver door panel. and yes i hear a click and found out that click was caused from the windshield wiper in the back. more than likely the problem is the motor it runs on or it has a short in the wire. now for people who wants soft tops. i have done research and found out the makers who made them went out of business and dont make it anymore. anyways a while ago i came across soft tops in a magazine for them and i their email is www.performanceproducts.com. have them send ya a copy the soft top is right on the cover page. good luck all ya 4runner fools out there!!! go toyota baby!!! #1 4runner fool!

I just bought a 86-runner and it is in awesome shape for only 4800. I am now looking into buying accessories and upgrades. Like tires, bars, and soft-tops. If any of you have some great ideas, please feel free to share it with me! I like off-roading but with not be getting into anything huge so lift kits and straight axles are pint less for me. I've down a fair bit of work to it already but just brakes and tranny work. Runs great. This is an awesome site, I've already read almost all the cheap/expensive tricks to play around with. I am in the middle of designing a soft top canopy (like Can-Back) as well as a tonneau cover for when caught off gaurd by the rain, but still gives you total openness. Hope to hear from you...please type "subject of email with something related to 4runners as I may delete it otherwise.

Hi, my neighbour has bought a long time ago a 4runner, but the car is original an canadien 4runner. The 4runner has a problem, when you hit the brakes the engine stops. The 4runner has been to several dealers but they couldn't find the problem. Now they order a new computer special imported from canada. Now my question is: Did anybody had the same problem with his/hers 4runner? If you did I really like the possible sollution to this problem please by e-mail. p.s. the canadien 4runners are not similar to the europian 4runners, so the dealers don't know what the problem is.

Toyotas rule - I've just bought my second Toyota, this one I imported from Japan, it is a Surf 3L intercooled diesel and it hauls (Australia stopped selling 4 runners around 94). I work with National Parks and Wildlife and only Toyotas can handle the punishment that we put vehicles thru - Nissans, Fords, Mitsubishi Pajeros and Holdens (General Motors) can't handle the outback of OZ (Australia) they rattle to bits - nor can the Jeeps. OZ is Toyota country as any cocky (farmer)can tell u - most have a Cruiser (Toyota Landcruiser) in the shed, beaut site, catch ya Jeff

Was just browsing and found your website. It's a great site! We are a toyota family. We currently own a 1988 Camry Le and a 1987 4-Runner SR5. We've had the car for 10 years and the 4-Runner for 9. It has 154,000 km and is a 4 cyl. 5-speed. It's been an exellent truck; but it's now for sale because we just went out and bought a 95 4-Runner. The 87 has warren hubs and I was getting tired of manually locking the hubs in the winter. Also have 2 kids and tired of only 2 doors on the 87. So glad to get shift on the fly and 4 doors with the 95. They are excellent vehicles and will probably buy another one.

Comment: Just recently had lost a the juice in my TOYOTA battery...battery tested good, but non the less it wasn't turning over for start-up. Replaced with new one (650) and no more problems. PLEASE HELP - BACK WINDOW OPENS SPORADICALLY! 87-Toyota 4-Runner SR-5 4-cylinder. Anyone who has had the problem, please send me an e-mail and tell me how you corrected the problem. Have a switch next to driver's seat in addition to key lock on back tailgate. I'm thinking a short of some kind. Occasionally, when it is not working, you can actually hear a clicking sound in the side panel behind the driver's seat. Is that where the relay is located? Excellent webpage! Sorry for posting an ad but this seems like a good place to see if anyone would be interested in my messed up 4x4. I have a 1997 4Runner that's in the shop right now. Badly damaged front axle(?), suspension, rack n pinion and possibly more. Other than that, the engine and all other areas beyond the front hood is still in good shape if not excellent. Insurance wants to have it repaired, I don't. Figure I'll take the insurance money and sell this to someone as is. dirt cheap! The shop is in San Carlos, CA. Check the photos for glimpse of the damage. Sorry, it's the best I could do in such a cramped space. Email if interested.

Just bought a 87 4Runner with 136,000 miles from a woman that bought it new in Sept 87. Everything works & nothing is broken, hell, the dash isn’t even cracked! It’s not an SR5, so it doesn’t have any gauges. I may add an oil pressure gauge, temp gauge, and tach at some point. The rear springs are sagging. Is there any good fix’s for this? Also, I would like to find out where I can get seatbelts for the rear seat. Thanks.

Hi, I am looking for factory original owners manuals, dealer brochures, options and accessories brochures, magazine advertisements for a 1988 Toyota 4Runner. Also looking for a mint set of SR5 wheels. Thanks.

I have an automatic 86 4runner. I am having exceleration trouble off and on. Usually when it is cold. Not sure if I can adjust anything to help with this issue. Also out of the blue the rear window stopped working. Any thoughts on that issue would be lovely. thanks all.

Finally a good 4Runner site! I own a 1990 4R V6 and have recently performed a (proper working!) coil-over solid axle swap with gears and lockers. If anyone wants to attempt this I've got lots of info incl. pics and Autocad drawings.
