I have a 96' 4runner. The check engine light comes on for a 100
miles or so and goes off again, quite frequently. The scanner says it
could be the o2 sensor. Is this sensor farily easy to get at to change

Hi, I've got a 96 4runner v6 automatic. I've had it for about 2
years now, and it's started having a problem. When I start the truck
& shift into drive, it will hesitate. Sometimes for a second,
sometimes for several minutes. Then it will finally "catch"
(I say catch because the vehicle jerks and makes a loud slamming sound)
before driving. I am worried about transmission problems, and I am
going to have the fluid flushed & changed. But it only does this
when the engine is COLD, any thoughts?

I have 86 4Runner with a 22re engine. At idle or low speeds my motor
was dying. I have to give it some gas at idle with foot on brake or go
into neutral. I checked and/or changed everything I could myself. Went
ahead and took into shop and they were stumped and had no idea. Took to
another shop and they said the air flow meter was bad. They wanted to
put it an $400 rebuilt and I said no. I found a part at a junk yard and
was told it is guranteed to be good. Installed it and still have the
same problem. HELP!! Any idea??? 2 bad flow meters???? Any way to bench
check them?? Thanks

Have 92 Pickup- 22RE. On warm start or hot start, It runs poorly and
requires extra "gas" to run smoothly under load or accel yet
It will still idle fine. After about 20 seconds of
"underpower" , it will kick in and back to normal smooth
running. Sounds sometimes like its "snoring" on lift throttle
. Could it be a bad EGR valve causing this problem? Replaced
rotor, cap, wires, fuel filter. Truck is a "time warp" with only
60,000 miles. Help!

i have a 1991 4runner with 158,541 miles that has been well cared
for since new... recently went through some wear repairs - replaced
rusted rear brake line, power steering pump, gas filter and had a
tune-up (plugs, cap, wires etc)... since repairs, gas mileage is very
off and when driving there is an intermittent miss that is best
described as the car seems to respond much the same as it would if you
were to hit a patch of ice and then all clears... does anyone have any
ideas as to what this could be or has anyone had a similar
experience... appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks.

A: Passenger side of engine block, just above the starter.
Regarding the TRD supercharger. Yes, it's worth it. After test
driving one with and one without, with was a definite must. My 4Runner
was new in 2000 and Toyota installed before delivery (back then, it
cost about $3500 installed). Haven't had a problem with it since.

Need help!! I have installed a brand new 3VZE 3.0 engine in my 1991
Toyota 4runner. Included are Downey headers, high flow cat, Jardine Cat
back, North West off road high flow fuel injectors, K&N cold air
intake. I have replaced the O2 sensor. I can crank the engine and it
cranks and sounds great for around 4 seconds. Then it dies like it is
not getting fuel. I also have squirted carb cleaner in the intake and
it will stay running as long as you keep squirting. I have double
checked the vacuum hoses and electrical and everything seems to be
connected properly. Also I checked pressure on the fuel rail and when
losening the release valve it squirts gas out of it with lots of
pressure. One thing we did that is a no no is we cleaned the throtle
body with carb cleaner without removing the Throtle position sensor.
Last but not least the engine has NO engine codes. Does anyone have an
idea of what this problem could be. If any one has had this problem
please contact me. Thanks

I have and 86 P/U and an 86 4runner, both with 22RE engines. The P/U
has a rebuilt engine but a beat body and the 4runner has a great body
but a beat engine. So next weekend I'm going to swap the engines. I've

parts I need to have on hand to make the swap go faster. The truck also
has a clutch with less than 20,000 on it and I'm wondering if I should
put it in the 4runner while I'm doing this or if that is just a bad
idea. I do have help and a shop with pneumatic tools and a cherry

About how long should I expect this to take me. Regardless, this will

I recently bought a 86 4Runner. The vehichle has 152,00 on the dash.
Drivetrain is stock a 22RE injected Squirrel Cage with a 5 speed. This
"turned" (past tense) a set of 35inch swampers. The truck
never seemed to have the power it should, but I guessed the tires may
have been the problem. Then one day it just didn't have what it took to
do over 20 mph. And if you rev the engine there was a "whine"
sound that would change pitch as the accelerater was pushed. At an idle
it sounded fine. I took the truck in for diagnostic test. Cost me
$68.00. The report was that the "timing was off" and couldn't
be adjusted. It had jumped time. So this saturday afternoon I tore off
the head , pan and timing cover and chain in all. Only to find that the
timing DID NOT JUMP. (I don't know why I didn't check the position of
the rotor first. I just figured the shop had since they couldn't set
the timing. BIG Mistake.) The head and timing assembly look brand new.
There was permatex silicone on the timing cover gasket. Very little
wear and no mess. Valves have almost no carbon build up. The cylinder
walls are close to perfection. I'm thinking maybe the prblem was
electrical(?)and the shop just toasted me on the diagnostic work. Hey
they wanted $800.00 for the timing chain replacement. Said the motor
had to come out cause the truck sat too high. Any ideas?

Supercharged and its A/C Issues. This truck is dealer serviced
every 3K and I along with the dealer is NOT able to solve WHY the A/C
will just stop blowing COLD AIR from certain vent registers!!! The A/C
will blow COLD AIR from drivers door side vent/drivers center vent as
well as passengers center vent and passengers door side vent for a good
1 hour than ONLY the passenger center and passenger door side vents
will have COLD AIR, while the drivers door side and drivers center will
blow STALE AIR! If I was to move the selector from FACE/PANEL VENTS to
DEFROSTER MODE this gets even more FUNKY! When I change to defroster
mode the to center vents are no longer operable which is correct while
the drivers door side and passengers door side vents will be COLD and
the front windshield will get STALE AIR not even cold enough to make
the windows fog up from condensation! ALL THESE ISSUES Occur from an 1
hour after Ive began my drive and if its a SUPER HOT day
the damn thing becomes a big sad failure and makes no sense of using
being unable to produce an effective ability to maintain COLD AIR CABIN
COMFORT. I live in Kona, Hawaii and our temps range from mid 80s
to upper 90s and an unexpected 102, 103 and a record 110 degrees
have been what weve been getting lately!!! So the A/C is
important to me. I was worried about the A/C problem and took it to the
Toyota dealership which I know a lot of you must think Im a freak
for going to them which would be costly. I am pretty lucky to not being
taken to the cleaners when it comes to dealer service, I guess
its from being a repeat/multiple car buyer of theres. I figured
at first being I am a HEAVY, BIG TIME A/C User since driving it off the
lot back in 98 and being I use my A/C day, night, rain, storm or even
SNOW... yes SNOW! I even use it when I travel to Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa
when we go snow boarding being my island is 1 of 2 which has snow
capped mountains. The island of Maui is the 2nd island to also have
snow as well. So I thought I ran the A/C system dry and was told NO the
SYSTEM is fine to the accounts of no leaks, per Toyota dealer and a
certified A/C Repair Shope. I would greatly appreciate anyone comments
to me at my email mailto:noa.kamanawa@kamanawa.com Look forward to your
comments shortly. Mahalo, Noa Kamanawa

I have 1990 4 runner, automatic, 4x4, 4 cyl. It runs great for the
first 5 minutes. Then it starts to idle around 400 rpm at idle and
wants to stall. If you try to take off it feels like youre in 4th
gear. Manually down shift and its slow to go until you hit 3000
rpm and then its like a turbo charged beast. Once you put it back
to drive it starts to load up and slow down so I have to keep down
shifting manually because it won't down shift on its own. If I shut off
the engine and restart it, the engine will run good but now it will not
down shift as before but it will not shift into overdrive either. Has
anyone else run into this problem or can you steer me in the right
direction. I had a Toy dealer tell me I need a transmission. The
transmission shop told me the transmission is fine that he thought it
might be the catalytic converter or Throttle Positioning switch. The
cat was new! Thanks for your help! Tom Email should read

I purchased a 2003 Tacoma 4*4 V6 last winter. I am attempting to
beef u[ the engine with a few inexpensive bolt ons but I ran into some
problems. I have a dynomax exhaust system and a throtle body intake
spacer. I purchased a cold air intake but after I installed the intake
I had a lag on the engine at low and high RPM's. I drove it like this
for a couple of weeks then took the intake off. The lag was gone. I
talked to the intake dealer and they had no info. They sent me a new
intake and still had the same problem. I think that I might have too
much air going into the engine and not enough fuel and voltage to match
it. Someone suggested purchasing a mass air-flow sensor would solve my
problem. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem? If all I need is
a mass air-flow sensor could someone direct me to a dealer? Thanks Chuck

I have finally had the money to buy my 1st Forerunner. It's a 1985
model ,one owner, custom paint, lift kit, all the fruit and i only paid
A$4000.00 for it. The motor is A1 and over all in A1 mechanical order.
The problem is it runs as rich as buggery! Can someone point me in the
right direction and suggest how many turns out the air /fuel mixture
screw should be on the standard carby on the 2 litre Petrol model? I
haven't had a chance to get a workshop manual as of yet. I can see me
owning this vehicle for many years to come. It's a shame that Toyota
didn't bring out a 90's model 2-door with the removeable roof. Keep on
4 wheeling dude's !!

I have a 94' 4Runner. The engine began to stumble at mid-throttle
and up. The check engine light came on. I read the codes and it gave a
71 and 52. The EGR system and the knock sensor. I replaced the EGR
valve and runs much better but the check continues to come on after
driving awhile. The same code #s are coming up. The manual states the
EGR gas temp sensor/circuit as a possiblity. Where the heck is that
thing. Thanks

I've just read through this board and I have seen a lot people
complaining about a head gasket problem. It is a Huge recall that
Toyota has placed. It affects primarly the v6 models from 1990-94, with
a few early model 95's as well. I had mine checked it and it ran clean.
They will check your vin and fix your gasket if it is a part of this.
Also, you may be able to get reimbursed for any gasket work that has
been done. I've been around to a few sites myself and that's how I
found out when I was researching my purchase. Now on to my question, I
have 95 v6 3.0 4x4 automatic, I've recently added on a 4"
Superlift as well as some 33x12.50 BFG MT's (which btw do rub a small
bit they are a tight fit), and a grill guard with some KC lights, I
want to correct a few small problems which might all be related. I want
to upgrade the engine power to a. correct for the tire size change and
b. to increase power on highway driving ( I hate going 45 up
mountains). What can I do to solve this I know I can replace the air
filters which will be a big component but is there any other
suggestions I can do like possibly putting in a supercharger or
anything else?

1990 Toyota 4 Runner V6 4x4 Starting Problems. First cold day in New

Battery was dead(Engine Not Turning, one click). Shut off key and tried
again and it turned over. Checked battery posts a little coraded.
Cleaned them with sand paper. It still intermittingly does't start.
Maybe 1 in 5 turns, same symptoms. Thinking it could be a starter. Has
anyone ran into this and how much does a starter cost to
install?(Ballpark)

RANCHO SUSPENSION UPGRADE AND BIG WHEELS AND TYRES. A FAULT HAS
DEVELOPED ON THE CAR CONSISTENT WITH A WORN OUT CLUTCH, I.E. WHEN
TRYING TO ACCELERATE THROUGH THE GEARS THE ENGINE REVS BUT NOT ALL OF
THE DRIVE GOES TO THE WHEELS, AS IF YOU WERE SLIPPING THE CLUTCH. THIS
PROBLEM IS PRESENT IN BOTH 2WD AND 4WD HIGH, IT IS NOT APPARENT IN 4WD
LOW, OR IN REVERSE OR FIRST GEAR. I HAVE HAD THE CLUTCH REPLACED WITH A
NEW ONE BUT THE PROBLEM REMAINS, THE MECHANIC WHO FITTED THE CLUTCH
SAYS IT IS A GOOD QUALITY CLUTCH AND IT IS FITTED CORRECTLY, HE ALSO
SAYS IT CAN BE SEEN WORKING CORRECTLY THROUGH AN INSPECTION PANEL.
THERE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE ANY OIL GETTING ON TO THE CLUTCH. IT WAS
THEN SUGGESTD TO ME THAT IT MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH THE TRABSFER BOX SO I
HAVE ALSO HAD THIS REPLACED BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. I HAVE ALSO BEEN
TOLD THAT IT MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH THE LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL IF ONE
IS FITTED IN THE REAR AXLE. I DO NOT KNOW IF IT HAS ONE OF THESE BUT
ASSUME IF IT DID THE PROBLEM WOULD DISAPPEAR WHEN I USE THE CAR IN 4WD.
EVEN THE DEALERS SEEM TO BE AT A BIT OF A LOSS BUT ARE RELUCTANT TO
HELP WITH ADVICE AS IT IS AN IMPORTED MODEL. IN DESPERATE NEED OF ANY
ADVICE OR IDEAS ON THIS 1, ALL SUGGETSIONS GREATFULLY RECEIVED. JEZ.

Just purchased a 1992 4runner 3.0 V6, 145,000 miles , it needed
several things and have performed the following : tune up, timing belt,
external belts, fan and fan shroud, coolant sensor, clean and lubricate
mass airflow sensor door, several tanks of gasoline with high
concentrations of injector cleaner. will be replacing the speed sensor
on the transfer case ( its 4x4 ). there are still three (possibly four
)problems. 1) the main problem seems to stumble from off idle to about
2000 rpm ( engine tone does not change when pedal gradually pressed nor
does it get into a lower gear). around town and at low speeds, the
engine seems not to want to 'take' fuel and is down on power. I can
artifically cause the engine to increase rpm's by pressing the
accelerator to the floow and making the auto tranny kick down. On the
road, the engine runs pretty smoothly , occasionally it seems to surge
or miss at speed ( 60 mph). I have noted that many of these issues
disappear after the engine is 'completely' warmed up. 2)It takes
approximately ten miles of driving at hiway speeds(60 mph ) in the
morning for the tranny to drop into overdrive. I know that there is a
temp switch or sensor that governs that, but isn't 10 miles a bit
excessive? 3) the engine is routinely ( tho not always ) hard to start
in the morning after coming to complete cold, overnite. Several
attempts ( usually six - ten ) will finally get it started, but the
motor stumbles (its still in 'Park') ,when it finally starts, until it
gets into fast-idle mode. 4) driving around town after warmup, the
speedometer works erratically and , coincidentally, the auto tranny
won't stay in a gear. speed sensor? tranny seems to have good, solid
shifts, otherwise. the tranny oil is not burnt or dark. I really like
this vehicle! the engine uses NO oil. Help please. Thanx, Mike

Purchase a 1994 4Runner 1 month ago and it does not have a owner's
manuel. I had the battery disconnected and now SEC appears on the
display for the radio. SEC means it is "disabled". In order
to fix it must be a "locked-up" unit. A disabled unit can be
"locked-up" by simply making repeated attempts (up to 10) to
put in an erroneous 3 digit code until the display reads HLP or HELP.
The procedure to input the 3-digit code can be found in the Owner's
Manuel. I do not have the manuel. Can anyone tell me how to input the
3-digit code from their owner's manuel? I do not need the code, just
the instructions on how to enter. Thanks for your help.

2003 Limited Forerunner. Notice: FRONT DRIVETRAIN VIBRATION (PERSON
WITH SIMILAR PROBLEN COULD NOT BE CONTACTED) I have a similar problem
with our 2003 Toyota Forerunner. Took it to the dealer yesterday and
this is what's going on! From their service report. "Customer
states vibration and noise in between 42 and 45 MPH and more severe at
62 Mph. You feel it in the steering wheel." "Noise from
front. Feel it is coming from front drive train." Called Toyota
tech, Assist. Tech has advised " to remove front driveshaft and
drive to find if noise goes away" No noise heard.
"Re-contacted Toyota, and was advised angle problem with front
driveshaft. Completely safe to drive. Approximately 30 days before
correct repair info." Waiting for the 30 days to go away. Hope
this helps someone! Dick Mueller

I have a 95 4Runner with a V6 Automatic. I'm trying to change the
enging radiator coolant. I drained it overnight into a bucket and got
right about 10 quarts out of it, which should be right according to the
owners manual. I tried to flush the block and radiator by pulling the
top and bottom hoses, draining what I could, reconnecting the lower
hose, refilling the radiator with tap water, running the engine to warm
it up and open the thermostat, and standing by to add more water to the
radiator when the thermostat opened up. BUT... it never seemed to open
up, even after idling for about 10 minutes. I tried closing up the
system and driving it around the block with just tap water in it and it
started to run a little warm on the temp gauge. Almost like there was
an air block or I lost the prime on the water pump. Is this even
possible???? I tried emptying the tap water and refilling the radiator
with the DEX-Cool (also controvercial stuff to use, from a few things I
have read.) and I could only refill it with about 3 quarts. I planned
on putting in 5 quarts of the DEX-Cool and 5 quarts of distilled water,
but I'm way short of that now. I'm afraid to run the truck for very
long because I don't want to burn it up....Help! Thanks, Al

Head cracking problems. I am a regretful owner of a 94' Surf 3.0
turbo diesel. Cracked its first head at only 80,000kms. Was welded
under warranty but blew again only a week ago. Fixing the problem
properly I'm told would involve new head, steam release rails,
machining, by pass valve and water pump totalling $4000 (aus). Opting
for a second hand local motor from the wreckers for $4300. At least it
has a 3 month warranty! and less kms. A very soul destroying
experience. Most of the Jap imports have been sitting in traffic for
60,000kms so buyer beware, you could find yourself up shit creek with a

Checked the condensor fan fuse but no worries there. Do these relays go
bad or is there any way to bench test these dogs??? What sage advice do

Has anyone had a problem with code #P0120-Throttle position sensor
circuit malfunction? I work as a technician at a Chevy dealership and I
attempted to diag myself but the diagnostic flow chart left me only
knowing my problem was intermittent. The check engine light comes on
only if I wrap the engine to redline or hit the rev-limiter. If I start
it up the light goes out on the third try. I beleive that if anything
is wrong it is a faulty ECM. The ECM controls emission functions and is
therefore under factory warranty until 80k miles but if my gut feeling
is wrong then I am paying someone elso to diag the problem. I won't
know until after it's done. If the ECM is faulty then there is no
charge to me but if it is any thing else I will have to pay for the
diagnosis and the part if I choose. By the way I have a 1998 4Runner
with the 5VZFE engine 5 Sp. manual trans, locking diff, and every other
option except power seats. all this on a "SR5" exterior. I
plan on lifting the truck with the Old Man Emu setup(hd springs and

I have a 1998 Toyota 4-Runner and was curious about a problem that
others may face. The problem is the spare tire. I recently purchased 3
new tires and put the spare tire (never been used)on to complete the
set. That spare tire could not be balanced due to Toyota
over-tightening the tire to the frame and causing the side-wall of tire
to be damaged. I would appreciate any feedback about this concern.
Thanks.

Hi, I have a '94 4Runner (series two, 6 cylinder), with 95K and the
automatic transmission fluid temperature (ATF) light comes on after
about an hour of cruising at highway speeds (have seen this problem
described here and at other sites). When the A340H transmission
overheats it also seeps a small amount of transmission fluid from the
front seal and I check and replenish fluid if needed.....(seals and 'O'
rings probably going bad from being cooked!) It stays off when cruising
at 65 mph or less (which is my current habit), and there is no
noticable leakage. The transmission doesn't seem to slip. I have
decided to add an auxiliary transmission cooler inside the front engine
guard panel underneath the front end, where there is a series of
louvers to provide air flow. There is no room to install a proper
auxiliary cooler in front of the radiator in this particular series of
4Runner due to the location of the radiator for the AC in front of the
engine radiator. The dealers seem to be clueless as to why this type of
problem should occur in a vehicle that is not being used for offroading
or towing. Various theories have come to mind but they are only
theories because there is NO INFORMATION available online or at the
dealer regarding this not-uncommon-problem. (Theories: Worn
transmission, blocked coolant pathway, loss of cooling efficiency due
to deteriorating 'O' rings and seals, slippage at higher speeds
generating excess heat, overshifting due to defective speed control
sensor) My hope is that adding the auxiliary cooler will help postpone
having to replace the transmission for a while.

My 93 4runner SR5 with 157,000 miles. The automatic
transmission will intermittently disconnect from the drivetrain, as if
it were a manual trans, and I put my foot on the clutch while driving

A rew days ago I posted an entry about my 1990 4Runner running
poorly after noticing several other similar entries from Canadian

shorting out in a wire harness along the passenger side of the truck.
After a year (and lots of expensive repairs), the problem was only a
wire! At least I can keep the vehicle, because I was going to go in and
ask for a trade-in today! God answers prayers, but in His own time!

I purchased a 2002 Toyota 4-Runner SR5 (4x4) in August 2002 from Nye
Toyota of Anchorage, Alaska, and I have brought the SUV in for
maintenance four times in 6 months because of a cycling chirping
noise in the engine compartment. The last time I brought the car
in, the maintenance technician, Heath from Nye Toyota, told me it was
the relay box in the front right of the engine compartment and there is
nothing he can do to prevent or deaden the chirping noise.
He said he called the national technical support line and noted that
numerous cases were documented, but everything the technicians tried
could not deaden or prevent the chirping noise. The details
of the chirping noise are it sounds like something is
cycling on and off, and the chirping noise starts at the
end of the cycling. It almost sounds like whatever is cycling is trying
to trigger the horn. It does not matter what speed the car is
traveling, or what controls (brakes, a/c, defroster, steering wheel
hardover, etc) are engaged, the cycling still happens and the
chirping noise still sounds. Anyone else have this problem?

1990 4Runner - A year ago, I noticed an occaisional jerk as I drove
on the highway. Over the months, the jerking became more frequent (but
still totally random) so I took it to the shop. Since then, it has
gotten worse. Now it jerks a lot, sometimes lightly and sometimes
drastically (like you might get whiplash), and at times it loses power
so that I can't drive in 5th gear, and the rpms go down to 500.I've
replaced the plugs, cap, rotor and wires, fuel pump and fuel injectors.
They checked the fuel pressure, ignition coil, pickup coil,
compression, ignition coil, air flow meter, engine control module,
engine harness, EFI main relay and sensors, ECM connectors, etc. It
seems like it must be a short or something, but the dealership doesn't
seem to want to do the work necessary to find it. Does anyone have any
ideas of what might be causing my problems?

My cruise control doesn't work that well on my 95 4runner. It does
work, but it always downshifts from Overdrive to 3rd gear (automatic) I
go up little hills and it does that, and sometime it downshifts when I
am going on flat land. What is the problem? Can it be fixed, thanks

I took my 95 4runner 3.0v6 to a dealer because of a
"chugging" a idle and because it was just generally not
running the same as it used to. My gas mileage has gotten considerably
worse recently also with loss of power. The dealer told me my head
gasket was cracked and that coolan and oil were in the engine. $1500! I
took it to another shop where they hooked it up to a diagnosticcomputer
and codes 24 and 25 came up.. They pressure tested itand came up with a
bad ECM and O2 sensor. Who should I believe? I don't want to end up
repairing all three if it's not the right fix. Thanks for any help.

Hi, I have a '93 4runner I'm trying to find a wrap around brush
guard for (hopefully with light guards) and am coming up empty. Anybody
know of a source? Thanks in advance.

I have a 95 4Runner, 4WD. On hard braking I have been hearing a
heavy 'thunk' in the front end. It sounds like metal hitting metal. I
took it to a shop that says that the control arms are loose and causing
the problem. Does this sound correct ?

Any comments will help. I have an '87 4runner. The rear window seems
like it has a mind of it's own. Sometimes it would work, sometimes not.
As long as I didn't lower the rear gate it seemed like it was working
fine, then one day it just quit. When I press the window down switch it
clicks so i think i'm getting power to it, not sure though. Maybe
switch, relay, motor? Anything helps. Go Toyota!
