Hello,
I recently purchased (5 days ago) a 1997 VW Passat TDI with 90,089 miles for $5,700 from a small lot dealer with very little knowledge of the car in general or the history of the car. What maintenance/repairs of the car should I be looking to to take car of at this time and in the next 5 to 30 thousand miles? The car rides great. I have put 120 miles on the car since filling the tank and the guage is just moving below the full mark. Incredible long range driving with the 18 gallon tank. How often should the oil be changed and what is the best brand and "weight" should be used. Is it recommended to use a anti algae/water build up for this car and how often?

Thanks for everyones' help in advance.

hey are you wondering how to get maximum performance out of a 1990 jetta??well the thing that you have to do is get an audi 5000 s throtle body and then a german head for your car if it doesnt have one and then you can get a piece of pvc pipe and it has to 2.5 in beacuse it wont fit other wise and you have to put that on the intake tube you have to take the other one off though....and then if you still want more take the smog crap off of the air box there should be a screw there with like a piece of plastic on it take that off and then get a really good air filter like a k and n filter...you can also get the fuel pump turned up so itll pump more fuel cause your going to need it..well thats all that i can think of....

I have a 1983 Volkswagen Vanagon aircooled regular gas bus. Recently the headlights went dead. they briefly came on one day whe I put the car into drive (she's an automatic) then went out again. I noiticed that there are some wires under the spare tire (which is located under the headlights). I recently put the spare tire back into place, I wonder if I snagged a wire ?? Anyway, if anyone can give me any tips on the wire setup, headlights..etc ..that would be great. I would love to fix this myself. One tech said that maybe both headlights went out at the same time..I find this hard to beleive. Please email me any suggestions..I need to get my bus going !! thanks!

I have a '81 VW Rabbit I would like to sell. I think it has 122,000 miles on it everything works. I am moving to the country and the dirt roads are not good on the suspension. Besides the only thing I know about diesels is when they break down you cannot find anyone that knows how to work on them. I had a mechanic go thru it from frount to back. Replaced what needed to be replaced and struts on the frount. Will take best offer. WildfireSLB@msn.com

Selling: 1983 Turbo Diesel Jetta. Well maintained car. I have owned this jetta now for three years and only drove it a-b. This car has about 125k miles. It's original. The car was imported from Germany to Canada then by me to Seattle. I love this car and have invested alot of money to keep it 100%. The uno-body has a bit of rust under the front right a-arm joints. This car would be an ideal parts car for someone who appreciates the 83 Jetta Turbo Diesel as much as I do. $700 ORO.........

I have a 1986 Jetta Diesel with 283K miles and still running. The only engine work I did was having the cylinder head machined and rebuilding the fuel injectors. It runs like a bueaty and burns no oil.

My dad has a 1991 Jetta Diesel with approx 211K miles. It smokes quite a bit but burns very little oil. It has noticeable less power than my Jetta. Recently, the timing belt snapped while my dad's Jetta was idling. We want to change the belt ourselves. We have successfully changed the belt on other diesels, but never on a VW. We can't find any of the TDC marks that let us know how to set up the engine before installing the belt. Does anyone have any knowledge on this subject? Is there a place where we can get accurately and "helpful" diagrams? My cheap VW Chilton book doesn't help us at all.

i have a 1981 rabbit with a 1986 vw golf 1.6 litre diesel. Once upon a time it over heated and the timing belt broke causing the pistons and the valves to smack together. I replaced the pistons with new and put back together. The engine now runs fine at idle but has no pickup when I try to drive it. Could my lifter rods be bent? Or is there another reason why things aren't like they should be. If you have any answers they would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I'm building a tachometer circuit for my deisel boat. I was wondering if you had any ideas on how to build it. Since there is no output directly from the engine, I need to develope some other input, I was thinking a LED reflecting off reflective tape on the shaft and onto a collector. Well, if you have any ideas, gimme a shout.

I am needing your help. I have a 6V-92 Detroit Bus engine. I am needing to know what time frame and what steps would it take to put a used/new engine that has the exact parts/model/etc. It is my understanding in the book to do the type of overhaul, that I need it would take 45 hours which would include taking certain parts off the old and putting them on the replacement engine, plus putting the old transmission on the replacement. Plus how much antifreeze would be needed or any other fluids/additional supplies. Could you please send me an email with this information?

Please send it to:

My son bought an 81' Jetta Diesel and it has had some upper engine work done. He had been driving around for a week or two and was pleased with how it ran and the mileage. He parked it the other night and now it won't start. It turns over fine and smokes some while trying to start. He has been through the glow plugs and relays. Checked for any fuel leaks or air leaks in all lines. Replaced the fuel filter, etc. Any suggestions? He also did a compression check and checked the injectors. The thing is that not many things can go bad while parked, not running. This is also 80 degree weather. TIA vvandiver@crisisclinic.org

I am a first time visitor to this great site. I was looking at the Guestbook and thought that we as VW diesel owners would maybe be better served by a Message Board rather than a Guestbook. Most of the entries in the guestbook are asking questions however there is no format to post a reply that we could all gain knowledge from.

What do the rest of you think???

Try this link to visit a message board type of site.

http://www.cbxclub.com/wwwboard/wwwboard.shtml

I'm not a web savy type so I don't know how much work is involved in setting one up but I think it's worth a look.

Keep the rubber side down!!

On a side note, I showed the car to my 16 yr old nephew and let him tool around in it and show his freinds and they all think the car is VERY cool. Also any idea why I have no reverse lights?

Hello Folks

I'm in Germany visiting and found a fairly decent VW Golf II. I would you know or if anyone can direct me to anyone that knows what was the original cost for a Brand New 1990 VW Golf II Diesel is?

I'm thinking of buying this baby and would like to hear from anyone that has this data officially on file.

I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks,
J.R.

I am still looking for information about putting a more powerful engine into my 1979 golf. I have been told that I can put an Audi diesel into this car without too much modification. Is this true? Where can I find info regarding this? How much power can I get?
PS - This is a gold mine of information.

Hi. I have a '99 VW Beetle TDI. The 'Check Engine' light has been on since I bought it from the original owner in December. The dealer's diagnostics say that the problem is the glow plug relay...and it's going to cost $200. Does that sound reasonable? Or is it something that I could buy from a parts company (recommendations?) and install myself.
Thanks for the help.

My daughter has a 2000 Jetta TDI and she loves the car and the gas mileage but has had lots of problems to date from windows falling out (twice) to brake repairs within the first year. Now her "check engine" light has come on and the service department tells her that the glow plug is bad and they advise that she replace all of them at the same time. Does anyone know what the life expectancy of glow plugs is and should she go ahead and replace all of them? Any help anyone can give her would be greatly appreciated. Angie

Hello, I have a passat'89 1.6 TD. I have a problem with the diesel heating system. If the engine is cold, the system works perfectly, energizes the relays and starts with no problem. But if it is warm, it doesn't preheat and it gets quite difficult to start it. I have made a manual control device to energize the relays and by heating even if the engine is warm it works properly. I have switched the water temperature sensor with the one that goes to the heating system and the problem persists. Do someone have an idea of what could be wrong?
Thanks.

My 91 Diesel VW Jetta is beginning to have problems starting in the mornings after a colder, late summer night. It turns over strongly but never seems to catch. Could it be a loss of pressure with the fuel pump (bum seal) or could it be the fuse relay for the glow plugs or anything else?

Broken Cam Belt
The cam belt on my 86 Golf finally gave out at 240,000 miles. I know, should have changed it long ago, but you konw how it goes.

Anyway, it gave out while I was idling at a stop light. I don't think anything was damaged, it just stopped. I got the belt cover off and the the belt was completely shredded. What are the chances of getting the pump, cam and crank aligned properly again on my own. My shop manual doesn't explain the procedure very clearly and I don't want to chance reallly ruining something.

Any help would be appreciated.

My 95 Golf hatchback has an annoying rattle seemingly at the latch. Ive tried tightening the latch by sliding the pin forward with no improvement. I changed the latch, still no improvement. Is there another way to diagnose and solve this problem. Tape wrapped around the pin only helps temporarily as the latch eventually cuts through it. Is there something in the hatch cavity that typically rattles in these cars? The rattle is only over bumps or on uneven road. Thanks. Ed

I have recently bought a audi 80 with the vw 16 turbo diesel engine. my problem is it won,t start when warm.
I have up to date, fitted , new cylinder head, thinking it was a compression problem, new heater plugs, relay, but those were not needed realy as you do not use preheat when warm.
But its starts if you bump it.
You can turn it over for ever but it won,t start.

I have a 1999 VW Golf TDI (automatic) that I just love. I initially drove it a lot, but due to a job site change I only drive 50 or less miles a week now (I'm not complaining). Anyway, my once very peppy care has become sluggish, especially on hills and getting onto the highway. I mentioned it to VW when I had the oil changed and they said the intake manifold was significantly caked with carbon, probably from not being driven as much and not having a chance to warm up. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it possible to avoid the $600 carbon-removal fee? Any advice would help. I fear I might have to sell my
wonderful car as I won't be driving it as much...I don't want to have to keep "decarboning" it!

Thanks!

Anyone know where I can get a 1.6 Diesel or 1.9 TD engine for my 1985 VW Transporter. (The Golf engine would also fit)

I have a 1986 VW Transporter TD Campervan. Last year was a
problematic year trying to cure an overheating problem.
Eventually the engine was diagnosed with a warped cylinder
head which was replaced/skimmed etc. With the new head fitted,
the problem still continued. I investigated the cooling sytsem
and found the radiator was blocked. This was replaced and still
the engine overheats. A new inline water pump was fitted but yes
it still overheats. I must say at this stage, the overheating
occurs only when the engine is working hard, during town
driving and chugging along at 60mph everything is fine. Boot
the engine up to max speed or up steep inclines and the
temp gauge starts to creep. The only solution so far is to
remove the thermostat and the problem goes away. However with teh
thermostat out, the engine normally runs cold and fuel
economy is lower. Has anyone else encountered similar problems
or can offer any advice. It would be great to get some advice,
thanks

If your truck acts like it is vapor locking and sometimes just quits I have the fix. Just check the disributor with fast accelaration the unit fails to turn your pump (fuel that is) fast enough to meet demand. I opted for rebuilt distributer the crown replacement unit harness was flimsey and did not mate well with wiring harness. I just aquired another project 81 vw truck desiel. Now the fresh gti 1.8 l
and suspension upgrade with front and rear sway bars But still have not figured out the turn signals from new wiring harness but i do have brake and tail lights so I still drive it

I have recieved a 1985 Jetta diesel w/ a broken timing belt for free, the guy told me that there was a 75% chance that the engine is shot. He gave me a new timing belt that he had purcased to fix it. Besides some rust the car is in great shape. Perfect for a project. The car has about 150 thousand miles. What I am wondering is if it is possible that this didnt cause major harm to the engine. How should i go about redoing the timing. If I cannot fix the engine, I would appreciate some hints on finding a dependable cheap diesel engine to put in it.

I have an 81 rabbit pick up that I have now almost completely rebuilt. I have an issue with my brake system
I replaced my calipers, and while I was on vacation, letting my sister drive the truck, my brother realized that my calipers where sticking, causing my rotors to warp, and causing the already weak engine to seem even worse. The pedal is hard to push, and very little braking action occurs with out more force than is common. The manual says that the vaccum pump might be suspect, so I replaced that, and made sure the check valve is working properly. I just completed the project, so I will let ever thing seal right. The driver side caliper can be moved, with the car on the ground, almost a quater of an inch, meaning the pads are not at all connecting to the rotor, which makes a horrible noise going slow over bumbs. And the passenger side is too tight. Everything is connected right, brakes bleed and all that jazz, Does anyone have any other suggestions before I destroy another set of calipers and rotors?

I own 3 Diesels. A 1981 Rabbit LS 4 door, 1983 Quantum TD, 1985 Golf 2 door. All 3 are running great. The Quantum is the most recent acquisition, and I am searching for the hoses that connect the turbo to the breather box and the hose to the pcv/blow-off valve. When I got the car it was missing the tuurbo, so I found one and had it put on. If anyone knows of a good source for Quantum parts, let me know!!! They are extremely rare up here in Canada. I wish there were more interest in them. I don't know why people don't care about them, besides, is'nt something rare and unusual more desirable? Call me crazy, but I like my Quantum!

I have a 77 bus that I am putting a 1.6 turbo diesel into.
I bought the engine with 60,000 miles on it for less than
new heater boxes on the aircooled. The 1.6 turbo has about
the same amount of torque as the old 2L aircooled; it
should drive nicely....
When that project is done, I will get my Grumman van with
the rabbit engine and transmission on the road. Anybody out
there have the Grumman/VW van?
In the meantime, my 82 rabbit with the origional, never
rebuilt diesel is still going strong.... 325,000 miles. It
started last night in ten degree weather with at least one
bad glow plug, and I did not plug it in. I have never
babied the car, either..... It is great for towing things; I
have a world war two army jeep trailer (with a rabbit pickup
axle) so I have never needed a pickup....
Great web site.

Hi - I own a 92 Jetta Turbo Diesel (love the car) has over 342,000 kms and I owned it since 96. It still has the original exhaust/clutch although the alternator has been rebuilt last Christmas. It
still gets great gas mileage and the only problem that I am having is that it tends to burn a little oil - since I replace it every 8-10k I will usually add about two liters of oil between changes. Now
if I drive mainly in the city it will consume less although driving on the hiway reaching speeds of 150-170km/h usually means that I will burn more oil. My question has anyone gotten their VW engine rebuilt
at a VW dealership? If so were you happy with the result or should I just replace the oil seals on the pistons and drive it another 300k?

richmond, va USA - Monday, February 18, 2002 at 19:12:17 (PST)

Ralph, there are several differences between turbo and non-turbo engines that I know about, and 3 of the most important are that the turbo has an oil line feeding oil pressure directly to the turbo bearings, which is required as the turbo spins 100,000 rpm or faster; it has an oil cooler to keep the oil from over heating and breaking down too soon; and oil is sprayed on the bottom side of the pistons to keep the heat down on them, as they run hotter because more fuel is being burnt and generates more heat in the process. There are other differences too, like the pistons and rings are different to take the extra stresses, and the fuel pump has a regulator on it to flow more fuel with increased boost, and other stuff. I have a normally aspirated diesel too and hope someday to pick up a smashed turbo diesel to transplant into mine. I had a turbo before and the difference in power is missed. I don't know where you could find a turbo kit, but I hope this helps you to understand what you may be getting into.

Finally, a clean, well lighted place where people talk VW Diesel!
I'm on my third. Why did I sell the first two? No good answer. I now have a 1989 Jetta. 185,000 miles, no teardown. Two timing belts and two water pumps. I'd love to turbocharge it, but am I asking too much from this little gal?
Anyone ever retrofit one with a kit? Any particular brand or type? and what cost is reasonable?
Just considering it, right now. Any info out there?

HELP...Can someone explain why all 4 of my seemingly relatively new appearing glow plugs are all bad? This car is new to me and won't start. I pulled the glow plugs today and they appeared glazed, and were not glowing when I applied 12 Volts to them. What could have fried them out? Also, what is the correct Bosch or VW glow plug part number for the "fast" relay? These are all four "champion" glow plugs (CH69). This car is a 84 Rabbit diesel. Thank you!

I'm looking for help with my daughters 95 Jetta GLS. There is an electrical problem. The trunk stopped opening with the key or latch, the sun roof won't open, the alarms goes off all the time. Now the windows won't roll down with the button inside, and the drivers door won't open from the inside. can any one suggest anything to look for? an fuse diagram or how to remove the door panels in the handle area?
Thanks in advance
