I have a 1981 VW diesel pickup that is in good shape with 165,000 miles. I've been having a vibration that can be felt in the entire vehicle. After replacing many things, it is determined that something is out of balance in the engine. Do you think it would be worthwhile to put in a rebuit engine on a vehicle that is so old? Where might I find a rebuit 1.6 engine?

I have a '91 Jetta Diesel. I just changed the oiland went from 10W40 to 10W30 for the winter. Now, all of the sudden, when the engine is heated up, the oil warning light flashes when the engine is at idle. It may only flash once or twice when the RPM drops down. I can get it to not do it by raising the idle a little bit with the cold start lever. Does this mean that the oil pump is getting weak? Or should I go back to heavier oil and see what happens? Am I OK driving it as long as it only flashes breifly and doesn't get any worse? Thaks for the help, Dan

Does anyone know how to adjust the injection timing on a 99 TDI? Apparently it can be adjusted, according to the dealer. I'm having starting problems, it cranks over fine but does not fire right away. It doen't seem to matter if the car is cold or hot.

For sale 1984 Volkswagen Turbo diesel quantum 5 speed manual.
170,000 miles 100,000 miles I personally put on the car, I am the second owner of this vehicle. The car was originally purchased in Sacramento CA I have in my possession all the service records from the original owner. MPG [ 37-41]
this car has never been in an accident, outside appearances is very good, the interior is also very good, all gauges and dials work the air conditioner is cold and a new radio was installed five years ago.. The transmission shifts smoothly- but slowly-it has always been like that. The engine and Turbo run very smoothly I personally changed the oil [4 quartz] and filter every 3000 miles. The engine does smoke when it is cold, as it warms up it is less noticeable. This car would be an excellent candidate for a vegetable oil conversion.

1997 Passat TDI I love the car but the Warranty From VW is no good. I took the car to Fladaboe VW in Lake Forest CA and they said that the problem was not "bad enough" but it had something wrong with it (at 99,000) Now that it has two thousand more miles it no longer will shift properly(1st is reverse etc.).

VW is backing the dealer saying that I should have had them fix the trans at my expense even though it was under warranty.

Transmissions for the car are about $2800 rebuilt and then labor on that.

I have had many VW's but never again. My kids are being branded for a different manufacturer. One that stands behind the product. Dealers must have an incentive to not pay warranty claims that they can get out of.

Never again.............

starting fluid spray, the problem with starting the engine in a cold morning dissapieared. But, this morning when I turn the ingition key the engine didn't even crank... Can someone tell me some tips? Besides that problem, the battery warning lamp goes off frequesntly when I drive in a rainy day. And something spueaks often when it's idling, too. What's wrong with my poor Jetta???

Laurel, MD USA - Friday, November 07, 2003 at 08:13:00 (PST)

Check the glow plugs and make sure they are working properly first, continued use of starting fluid is not a good idea. Then test your battery and alternator, likely the alt. is not charging the battery and it is running down. Most auto parts stores will do this test for free. It could be you simply have a loose or worn belt driving the alternator, it slips (the squeaking sound you hear) and the alt. can't put out enough current to keep tha battery charged. Could also be that water is splashing up from the tires onto the crankshaft pulley and that is causing the slippage, a wheel well liner/splashguard can help with this.

I just bought a 92 Jetta 1.8 gas runs rich at idle and running speed and won't pass emissions test, tried O2 sensor and switched valve in air filter box but no difference, lots of power but stumbles occassionally.
Any advice would be appreciated, No check engine lite comming on. I will check fuel rail pressure next. Did cap/rotor before Etest. Thanks

Just bought a used 1999 Jetta TDI, had some problems with it that the dealer was able to fix, but noticed that it seemed to not start as easy as our 2002. Had it in twice and the Mass Air Sensor was replaced. But the problem seems to still be there, anyone have any ideas what it could be?
Other things I noticed when compared to the 2002, a strong diesel smell even when idling, and fuel milage is not quite as good, also seems not quite as spunky.

hello!finally i have somebody to discuss about my caravelle van TDI 1996 model. I really love this van but the problem here in the philippines, is they control the price of the spare parts. I would like to seek an advice if its cheeper to order abroad, like the timing belt, tensioner, aircon belt, brake pads and starter and also the tyrod assembly front. Any help you could extend will be highly appreciated. I just changed my dumper pulley and I paid P 22,000.00 excluding the labor. What do you think?Did I got it in a good price? Having a caravelle van is not that easy especially if you are not that rich. Thank your and hope to hear from your soon. God Bless!

Can anyone out there give advice on oil changes for new beetle 2001 diesel. The dealership just quoted me $84.95 Canadian for an oil change. That seems pretty darn steep to me. They say you need 540 synthetic oil (five litres at 10 bucks a pop) and only a # 074 115 562 oil filter. Am I about to ruin my bug if I take it elsewhere for an oil change?

Check the grounds on the headlights, likely you have a bad connection.

on an 82 Rabbit diesel: I am having a hard time keeping the engine running, if I start to open the throttle up the engine stalls and the only way I can keep the engine running is if I kind of 'wiggle' the throttle around in the center of its range, in which case it runs roughly. I have been looking for information on the Injection pump itself but have had very little luck... does anyone have any links / ideas which might help me?
Thanks

“Caddy” pickup truck. I would prefer a diesel , but I will
Consider all VW pickups that might be for sale..
Do you know of any available for sale in or near the Southern CA area?
I have cash, I will travel!
Also, I have a 74 Westfalia pretty well restored with a new 2.0 motor, new tires, brakes, shocks, clutch, interior, canvas, seat covers, curtains, etc. It still has the original gas stove and propane tang, water system and 2 way refrigerator. I would be interested in selling or trading this.
Also have a ’60 single cab truck available. No motor, but mostly complete otherwise.
Has some spare parts and 2 complete sets of drop-sides.
Willing to put together and combination of deals that make sense.
Thank you

Great site! I got a 1982 Caddy diesel with a spare engine for $100! Don't get too excited, though - the wiring harness is a morass of poorly executed 'repairs' that will take months to sort out, and brakes and glow plugs (at least) are shot. Then again, there's not much rust - odd for Wisconsin! I'm looking forward to getting it running, though, so I can start making biodiesel. (Why use foreign oil when I can support US farmers instead?) If anybody hears about a jetta, rabbit, or especially a westy in dire straits, I'd be interested! Gas is OK too, since I have a spare diesel.

caddy as well as I do mine. I located my 81 caddy by literally stumbling across hi at my local salvage yard. I was looking for parts for a GTO judge and tripped on the tailgate. After I finished berating myself for my clumsiness I took "Eddie" home.

popping out of reverse when backing. Recently when i was on the interstate, after i had slowed, the car only managed to go into third and will not change gears. It was also kind of making a high piched sound before this all happened. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if it might be the clutch, linkage, or the tranny?

I just bought a 79 Rabbit form an old farmer. the car had been sitting for several years in a pasture. the man had swapped engines with a latter model jetta at about 490,000 and then drove it for another 200,000 before parking it. now she has close to 1,000,000 on the car and 500,000 on the engine yet a resent compression test showed that she still has amost new compression about 300 psi in all four!
and still gets 40+ mpg.

1. I bought an 81 diesel pickup new. Recently I feel a lot of vibration in the accelerator pedal; especially at a lower speed if I'm in third and take my foot off the pedal. It has already vibrated a screw out of the glow plug fuse. I've had the compression, glow plugs and injectors checked, but nothing wrong there. Also the mechanic said a motor mount is a bit soft, but he doesn't think it could be causing the problem either. 2. This week, the engine was accelerating and I wasn't moving. This happened once before and the problem was in the accelerator cable. Should this be replaced or can it be adjusted or is this not the problem. 3. I come in to town after driving on the highway and stop at the first light. Then I have a difficult time getting it to shift into first gear. Sometimes I also have a problem shifting into reverse. Any one have any suggestions? Any one in Oregon know of a good vw diesel mechanic near Newport? Thanks.

I too love my diesel P/U [1981] I bought it bran new and have not had a sorry or bad experience with it. I change the engine oil and filter every 3,ooo miles [without fail]and the timing belt every 60,000. I keep the air and diesel filters replaced yearly, need it or not. I have over 200,ooo miles and the head has never been off and apparently doesn't need to any time soon. I still [always have] get 46 MPG. Does anyone know where to find out what these lovely vehicles are $ worth?

While I do not have it any more, my 1981 diesel rabbit was the best (and most frustrating) car I've ever known. I've had it apart in my driveway 6 times, but my father is a diesel mechanic, so we bonded. I put racing stripes on the hood and roof, huge numbers "33" on each side, net windows, and racing helmets with "33's" on them. Despite its inability to do 70 mph falling from the sky, I'd still come up to challenge mustangs and camaros just for laughs (they actually thought I was serious!). Many of my teenage memories have to do with that car. I heard from one of my friends that is now a taxi over on Catalina Island.

Does anybody know where I can buy cylinder head parts for a 1985 1.6 Turbo diesel jetta. Namely I am looking for the pre-combustion chamber inserts. Mine are cracked and the vw dealer does not sell them separately. Or has anybody had experience with repairing them or is it normal for the cracks to be there and should I just put them back in the head?
